KEYSTONE+ PROJECT - Lichen
Lichen break down bare rock using specialized acids, creating the first layers of soil for plants. They provide food and nesting material for many animals from deer to birds. In Arctic climates and alpine forests, their presence dictates the survival of dependent grazing animals and microfauna. Lichen absorb nutrients directly from the air. This makes them sensitive barometers for environmental pollution and clean air.
